Can glass partitions be installed without major construction?

Usually, yes. The glass is made to size off-site and set into channels fixed to the floor, ceiling and walls, so there's little demolition. Uneven floors or ductwork in the way add work. If the plan adds or removes walls, check whether the City wants a permit first.

How private can a glass office be?

As private as you need, in stages. Frosted or patterned film blocks sight lines and keeps the light; a band at eye level is a common middle ground. Sound is harder: thicker or laminated glass, double glazing and door seals all help, but glass won't match a solid insulated wall.

Are interior glass doors safe?

Built properly, yes. Glass in doors has to be safety glass: tempered, which breaks into small blunt pieces, or laminated, which holds together. Put a film band on clear glass so nobody walks into it, and give a sliding door end stops and a guide so it can't jump the track.

Does a City grant cover interior glass partitions?

We haven't found one that does. The Windsor CIP grants we know of are aimed at façades and storefronts, and whether the Downtown program covers interior work isn't confirmed. Office fronts and meeting-room walls

Most office glass is one of three types. The pro suggests one after seeing the floor and ceiling it has to meet.

Framed partitions

Glass in slim aluminium frames, often black. Sturdy, easy to add a door to, and forgiving of a floor that isn’t level.

Frameless glass walls

Panels joined with clear seams and slim channels. The cleanest look, but it needs a level floor and a solid ceiling.

Half wall, glass above

A solid lower wall with glass on top hides desks and cables, and is often the simplest way to open up an existing wall.

Sound and privacy

Single glass stops some sound, not all. A room for confidential calls usually needs thicker or laminated glass, sometimes a double-glazed wall, and seals around the door. Tell the pro plainly what the room is for.

For privacy, frosted film or etched glass can cover a whole panel or a band at eye level. Film can go on later and come off if the room changes use; see window film.

Interior glass doors: swing, sliding and barn-style

Swing doors suit a meeting room that’s in and out all day. Sliding doors run on an overhead track and save space in a narrow hallway. Barn-style doors hang on an exposed rail; they look good but seal less well, because the door sits in front of the opening.

Working in occupied offices and older buildings

Most partitions go in while the office keeps running; the glass is made to size off-site, so on site it's mostly fitting.

Older downtown and main-street buildings add checks: uneven floors, plaster ceilings, and sometimes heritage status. The City keeps a heritage register, with many entries downtown and in Walkerville and Sandwich. The proposed Walkerville heritage district would cover exterior changes, not interiors, according to the City's study page. If your building is designated, ask the City's heritage staff what its protection covers before anything is fixed to original walls.

Adding or removing most walls needs a City of Windsor building permit, so ask whether your layout counts.
