Cutting summer heat and glare with window film in Windsor-Essex
This page is about houses and storefronts, not cars. Window film is a thin sheet bonded to the inside face of your existing glass. Around here the usual reason is July: a west-facing living room that won't cool down, or glare off the river washing out a screen. Film can also add privacy, or help a storefront pane hold together. Heat and glare
Solar-control film for hot south- and west-facing rooms
No Ontario city has longer, more humid summers, and Windsor racks up more cooling days than Toronto. Rooms with big south- or west-facing glass feel it first.
Solar-control film stops part of the sun's heat at the glass, before it gets into the room. Some films are close to clear; others look tinted from outside. Homes facing the water also get glare off the river, and a light film can calm it without darkening the view.
Each film is rated for the solar heat it lets through, the daylight it keeps and the UV it blocks. Compare those ratings in writing, not the adjectives on the sample board.
Privacy
Privacy, frosted and decorative film
Frosted film makes a bathroom window, a front-door sidelight or a street-level office private while letting daylight in. It comes plain or patterned.
Mirrored privacy film works one way in daylight and the other way at night, once the lights are on inside. For privacy around the clock, frosted is the safer pick. For etched or patterned glass instead of film, see glass and mirrors.
Check first
Film on sealed units and low-E glass: check the glass first
Most windows have sealed units, the double-pane thermal glass. Film makes the inner pane run hotter in the sun, and some glass copes with that better than others, so large or tinted units get a close look.
Ask the installer to check what glass you have, whether it already carries a low-E coating, and what the window maker's warranty says about film. If a unit has a blown seal and is already fogging, fix that first; film won't clear it.
Storefronts
Security and safety film for storefronts and ground-floor glass
Security film is a thicker, clear layer that holds broken glass together. It won't make a window unbreakable, but it slows someone down. For repairs after damage, see storefront glass.
What it does well
Holds a cracked pane in place after a hit, so the opening stays covered until new glass is made: a cracked window overnight instead of an open one.
What to ask
Whether the film is only on the glass or also attached to the frame; attaching does more. Ask about glass warranties and your insurer.
Options
Film, solar glass or shade: when each makes sense
There's more than one way to calm a hot room. For fog, cracks or sticky sashes, start at window repair instead.
Film
Suits sound windows you're keeping, a hot room or two, rentals and storefronts. Least disruption.
New solar-control glass
Makes sense when the sealed units are failing anyway or the windows are due for replacement. The coating sits protected inside the unit.
Shade outside
Awnings, exterior shades or a tree stop the sun before it reaches the glass. Worth a look on a west wall.
