Heritage homes: Sandwich's rules today, Walkerville's plan in progress
Sandwich became a heritage conservation district in October 2012, and its plan spells out which window jobs need a heritage permit. Walkerville isn't a district yet. Its draft plan went to a public meeting in September 2026 and is expected before Council this winter, with window rules still to come. Start with the City of Windsor. The Sandwich district plan has a table of which window and door jobs need a heritage permit, and our repair-or-replace guide sets it out in plain English. Walkerville's rules are still a draft. If your house is designated elsewhere in the city, ask the City's heritage staff before changing original windows.
Is there any grant money for windows in Windsor-Essex?
Yes, in parts of Windsor. The City's Sandwich Town and Ford City CIP grants name windows, front doors and porches, and main-street façade grants cover storefront glass. Ontario's Home Renovation Savings Program adds a rebate for complete ENERGY STAR windows and doors. The County towns sit outside the City programs. Why do my windows sweat in summer?
It depends which side the water is on. On the outside, it's morning dew on glass that the air conditioning and a cool night have chilled, and it burns off. On the room side, look for a steamy bathroom, a boiling pot or a damp basement. Between the panes, it's a blown seal. The condensation guide walks through all three.
